2D Judge: Susan Dade

A graduate of the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Susan began her career as a high fashion illustrator for Womens Wear Daily and Glamour Magazine. After her stint in the fashion world, Susan went on to teach in various New York art schools. Tired of years of hectic city life she was ready for a change of pace and a warmer climate. Having vacationed in the area Susan and her husband moved to Brunswick County. Now, instead of sketching models, she paints landscapes, waterfronts and marshes. Her paintings are free and loose, yet detailed. Her palette is bold, colorful and expressive. As a Watercolorist, her style is uniquely her own.

Her work is in many private and corporate collections including The Brunswick County Courthouse, Dosher Memorial Hospital, Allegcy, UNCW, and Coldwell Banker.

Since residing in Murrells Inlet SC as of 2022, Susan has won several awards as a member of the Waccamaw Art Guild

as well as Seacoast Art Guild.

3D Judge: Heather Lee McLelland

Heather Lee McLelland is a maker based in Cary, North Carolina. She recently moved from Wilmington, NC, where she found her deep connection to working with clay and fire beginning in 2006. Heather is constantly being influenced from her surroundings and traditions growing up in a Korean American household. Ceramics decorated the house and filled the cupboards. Growing up, she had fond memories of being in the kitchen with her mom, smelling and tasting different foods. The table was always full of lots of various dishes with colorful smells. There was always some kind of conversation at the table. Now, food and drink are the centerpiece to finding connections with her family and friends.

Currently, Heather is experimenting with different hand building techniques to create unique forms for the table.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Heather grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In 2002, she received her BA in Psychology with a minor in Art at Elon University. During undergrad, she traveled through the US, Australia, and Europe. She eventually settled in Wilmington, NC, to continue her education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). Looking to reconnect with some of her heritage, Heather did an apprenticeship in Cromarty, Scotland, where she worked with Berbal Dister at Cromarty Pottery.  She has also attended Winter Residency at Penland school of craft and a residency at La Meridiana, in Italy.  In 2020, she received her Master of Arts in Ceramics at East Carolina University. Finishing up teaching a range of Ceramics courses at UNCW, Heather is starting her transition to becoming a full-time artist.

“Cut It Up Workshop”
The "Cut It Up" workshop is about finding new forms in clay. We will work with found objects and create paper patterns from these objects. We will also create loose maquettes in clay and cut them up to create paper patterns. Working with patterns are a great way to explore forms that are unique but can also be made repeatedly through slab work.
